Nneka Jones

Nneka Jones is a visual artist based in Tampa, Fl. She is known for creating highly detailed embroidery work, and bringing focus to social justice issues. In addition, she was featured in TIME magazine. Nneka uses influences of her native land, Trinidad and Tobago, with rich Caribbean colors.

In addition, she is a photographer, mixed media artist, and accomplished painter. Nneka says, “I am a contemporary activist artist who uses mixed media artwork as a vehicle for social change. I experiment primarily with hand embroidery techniques to marry portraiture and symbolism. This captures the attention of the viewer and helps spread awareness about important topics that are often overlooked in society.”

She says, “During such a difficult year, it was hard for people to give not only mentally but also financially. Fortunately for me, I was able to find a way to use my artwork to give people a sense of hope and optimism for a brighter future.” Nneka Jones partnered with Bianca Burrows to create a SHINE mural entitled “The Global Currency”. “We focused on the aspect of overfishing being driven by money,” said Jones. Above all, she uses her art to focus on activism. The mural is embedded with information via the Pixelstix app, accessible through smart devices.
